When we were approached back in early 2017 by the quantity surveyors to see if we were interested in being involved in this project we jumped at the chance. The scheme was to build a purpose designed totally unique home for a young lady with mobility issues. The home had been designed to give independent living enabling the client to have total control over the home from answering the door to traveling between floors to entertaining in the garden.
The project was to be built in the garden of an existing property which had access constraints to the side due to a shared access driveway. The project was started at the end of September 2017 and we set a target of being water tight by the end of December, which we comfortably achieved, and the project was handed to the client to move in at the end of March 2018. We were responsible for all works on site and management of the sub-contractors responsible for the home automation, specialist sanitaryware suppliers and lift installers, along with the kitchen supplier. These sub-contractors were managed throughout the build process as each trade needed to be involved at different stages of the build. When it came to finishes, high quality products were used to ensure minimal future maintenance and longevity of the products. These included big brand items such as Villeroy and Boch and HansGrohe in the bathrooms, oak and glass for the staircase and Marley Cedral Cladding externally.
As part of the contract we also included all hard landscaping works along with the installation of the centre piece pizza oven placed in the garden. As part of the landscaping works, composite decking was used along with Indian stone paving to create solid level access around the entire property. The project has received excellent feedback from building control and all professional bodies involved and recently gained finalist status at the recent LABC Building Excellence Awards for North & East Yorkshire.
